Indoor Activities for Winter in Perthshire
Perthshire weather can often leave us looking for things to do indoors in winter—well, often also some of the spring actually, if we’re being honest! This can especially be the case if you’re looking for something to enjoy as a family.
There are of course the usual solutions of the cinema and sports and leisure facilities, but what if we want something a little different or lower budget? We’ve come up with a few alternatives in this article:
Perth Art Gallery
There’s not long left to see the Glass exhibition, which ends in February. There are also Gallery Highlights tours of the permanent displays running on Saturdays and Sundays from 2pm with no booking required. Admission to the permanent displays is by donation. There’s also an interactive children’s area, Hands On Art, and a coffee cart.
While you’re in Perth, and if the weather permits, pop along the river to the Norrie Miller park, which makes a pleasant and fun little walk, and look out for the sculptures along the sculpture trail.
Perth Art Gallery reopens on 9th January. Please check opening hours on the website:
Birnam Arts and Beatrix Potter Exhibition
The Beatrix Potter Exhibition at Birnam Arts makes for a great family activity and is reasonably priced, at £4 per adult and £3 per child (over 3), or you can get a family pass for £15, which includes up to 4 children. There are lots things for the kids to do, including dressing up and activity boxes. If the weather allows then a look round the Beatrix Potter Garden is also good fun and entry to that is free.
Cake and hot chocolate in the Birnam Arts cafe are sure to warm you up if you do manage to get into the garden for a bit, and there’s usually an art exhibition to wander around upstairs. Once you’ve fully explored, you could drop into the Birnam Reader and choose a book to read together when you get home.
Birnam Arts reopens on 6th January. Please check opening hours on the website:
The Pitlochry Dam Visitor Centre
You can be forgiven for thinking that learning about hydro electricity and the life cycle of a salmon might be a slightly dull activity, especially for younger family members, and I have to admit I used to think the same. Until I actually went and found it to be very interactive, fun and interesting! There’s also a good cafe with a stunning view, and, again if weather permits, a walk over the dam and down by the fish ladder is always fun.
Closed from 12th - 27th January. Please check opening hours on Facebook:

We hope you find something here that you can enjoy as a family this winter!
