Swing by for Lunch: A Review of the Strathmore Golf Centre Restaurant

Since Nathan and I don’t play golf, we don’t often visit golf clubhouses, restaurant or not. So when we were invited to lunch at the Strathmore Golf Centre, Alyth, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect. But happily, you don’t need to be handy with a 9-iron to appreciate good food in a beautiful setting!

The restaurant sits adjacent to a green, and we were seated in a bright, airy conservatory that opened up to stunning views over the course and out to the hills beyond. It’s the kind of spot where you instantly feel at ease, partly thanks to the friendly staff, who were welcoming and managed to get that perfect balance between attentive and easygoing.

It happened to be a glorious Perthshire day—blue skies, sunshine, and shining green grass—but the menu made it clear they’re just as well prepared for the more familiar damp and chilly kind of round. I’ll mention here that breakfast is available as well as lunch, although of course our visit was for the latter.

A mix of hearty Scottish staples—like steak pie, fish and chips and lasagne, is offered along with a few lighter options, such as duck breast or poached salmon. There’s also a ‘no frills’ menu, which includes things like macaroni cheese, burgers and omelettes. It’s a blend that works perfectly, catering to golfers fresh off the green and those just there for the food and the view.

For our starters, we both went the cheesy route! Nathan had breaded brie with cranberry sauce and I had the goats cheese tart with red onion confit and sun-dried tomatoes. Both dishes were truly delicious and the richness of the cheese was offset by the well-chosen accompaniments, as well as a refreshing salad.

For our mains, I had the poached salmon, which came with a lovely prawn and hollandaise sauce. Underneath was a creamy mix of crushed potato and leek, which I really enjoyed. I would have been happy with just that, but there were some extra vegetables around the side as well, making for a comforting and filling lunch.

Nathan had the chicken schnitzel and chips (yes, you read that right, he didn’t order fish and chips this time!) and summed up his reaction by saying that you really can’t go wrong with chicken that’s been breaded and fried. How true. The chips were great as well.

We were both too full for dessert, although I was very, very tempted by the apple strudel special! There’s a great range of items on this menu, whatever you’re in the mood for.

So, although we might not know our way around a golf course, we do know a good food course! This place delivers on nostalgic favourites and Scottish classics, offering a wide variety that’s also tailored to its setting. Whether celebrating a win, recovering from a rainy round, or, like us, just enjoy a good meal with a great view, the clubhouse restaurant is worth a visit.
