4 Family Activities for February

February can feel like a quiet month, but it’s actually a great time to get out and enjoy some family-friendly activities around Perthshire during the school holidays. From museums and cafés to gentle walks and days out with animals, here are four easy ideas to help you make the most of the month:

Perth Museum

February is a great time to visit Perth Museum, even if you’ve been before, because newly on display is the Last Letter of Mary, Queen of Scots. This is the first time it’s been to Perthshire and it will only be for a limited time, until 26 April.

If you have younger children, you may want to time your visit for February the 14th, for the free ‘Meet Mary, Queen of Scots’ event, plus a reading by Gill Arbuthnott from her book The Amazing Life of Mary, Queen of Scots.

Stewart Tower Dairy

The Stewart Tower Dairy is a lovely little place to visit for the whole family. The Roundhouse Cafe and Ice Cream Parlour offers a delicious selection of crowd pleasers, and they have a selection of animals you can go and look at afterwards, including pygmy goats, pigs and ponies.

Nearby in Stanley is the Active Kids Adventure Park, with a mix of indoor and outdoor play.

Aberfeldy Watermill

A visit to the cosy Aberfeldy Watermill to browse the latest books and art is always rewarding, especially paired with coffee and cake. There’s a separate children’s book area where you can settle down to look through what’s available and choose something nice to take home.

Aberfeldy is also home to The Birks cinema, so it’s definitely worth checking the programme to see if there’s anything you’d like to see while you’re in the area. There’s also the Breadlabane Community Campus with its swimming pool and sportshall.

Den o’ Alyth Walk

Just a brief drive outside the small town of Alyth, this walk has a convenient car park and well-kept path, though it can be muddy in places. After a short slope downwards, past a children’s play park and grassy area, the path flattens and takes you along the Alyth Burn, the same one that also runs through the town itself.

This is a great family friendly walk, with benches dotted throughout, and because there’s a couple of bridges over the burn, you can take a slightly different way back if you wish to see the other side of the river at any point, depending on if and where you decided to cross over previously. There are no wrong choices here, every path has something to offer!

So whether you’re looking for something educational, outdoorsy, or just a nice place to relax together, these activities offer a good mix of options for families in February. Even a short trip or local visit can make for a memorable day out. And making memories together is what it’s all about!
