5 Favourite Things About Winter in Perthshire
I’ve written an article like this in the last few years for spring, summer and autumn but not really for winter, which may give the impression that I don’t like it, but in fact I enjoy all of our Perthshire seasons. It must be said though, that winter is the one that goes on the longest, and often seems even longer than it actually is! However, this undoubted truth is also what gives spring its full savour, so it has a place. There’s also lots we can enjoy and appreciate during the season to make the most of it. Here are my top five:
Snow and frost
I know not everyone loves snow, but I do! Whether out making snowmen with younger family members, enjoying a peaceful walk through a suddenly hushed and still landscape, or watching it fall softly while snuggled up inside, there’s nothing that evokes the spirit of winter more.
Something I think we can all agree on is the beauty of a new, crisp day sparkling with frost, inviting those who can to enjoy a brisk walk, followed by something warming at home, be that a coffee and slice of cake, or perhaps a ginger wine or wee dram!
Saunas
No one is happier than I am to see the wild sauna wellness trend springing up all over Perthshire. So far I’ve only tried the WildEmber Sauna, but on my list is the Braan Sauna, Nowhere Sauna, Taymouth Marina, Breathe Outdoor Spa and the new Ballintaggart Sauna. Quite a few to choose from there, as you see!
Although they can be enjoyed all year round, there’s something about the contrast between the biting outdoor chill and the enveloping heat that invites pure relaxation, especially if you try a cold water plunge too! In winter, saunas are a sanctuary where you can recharge, unwind, and appreciate the simple pleasure of warmth.
Chai lattes and hot chocolates
In summer my go-to drink when out and about is an iced latte, but as soon as winter arrives a switch to chai whenever I can, and I’m delighted that, once a rare find, most independent cafes I’ve visited in Perthshire now offer this spicy and comforting drink. Fika in Aberfeldy do a particularly good one.
Hot chocolates are something that can be enjoyed at home, perhaps as a treat after a wintery walk or play in the snow, or you could set up as a hot chocolate bar for an afternoon activity. For a really indulgent treat, the hot chocolates from The Highlabd Chocolatier in Grandtully are something rather special. I particularly love the white chocolate and raspberry one…
Starry skies
In Perthshire we have the opportunity to star gaze on clear winter nights in otherwise dark skies, with little light pollution. Even if you live in a town, a rural area is usually only a short drive away.
There’s the Geminid Meteor Shower to look out for through December, (peaking around 14 December). If you pick the evening and location right, it’s also possible to spot the northern lights. There are social media groups you can follow to find out when you’re most likely to see them. Pack a flask of soup and a blanket and enjoy!
Cosy crafts
Say what you like about long dark evenings and wet Sunday afternoons, they’re the perfect opportunity to get creative and/or enjoy a hobby. You could be knitting by a cosy fire, painting at the dining table, tending an indoor garden, or baking cinnamon buns, whatever works for you. The point is to have that feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day, perhaps because something now exists that didn’t before, perhaps simply because you’ve done something for you.
To sum up then, winter in Perthshire can be an encouragement to slow down and savour simple pleasures. Enjoy the crisp beauty of a frosty morning, warm up in a local sauna, treat yourself to an indulgent hot drink after a walk, take an hour to look up at the night sky, and feel the calm that comes from creativity. There’s plenty to appreciate before spring!
